Streamlining Portland Community College’s Captioning Workflow<\/h1>\n\n\n

In higher Education, simplifying the captioning process for the long term can be a real challenge. Portland Community College (PCC) tackled and overcame this challenge by leveraging 3Play Media\u2019s streamlined integration with Kaltura. How? Before partnering with 3Play Media for captioning and transcription services, Portland Community College faced a number of challenges in captioning its video content in-house. However, PCC found that many of its captioning challenges were solved by working with 3Play Media and utilizing the Kaltura integration to streamline the process. Before working with 3Play Media, PCC was captioning all their videos in-house \u2013 a process that wasn\u2019t sustainable long-term. Before 3Play? Captioning took five times the length of the video. After 3Play? PCC had more time, more resources, and a more streamlined captioning process.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s how fast PCC Disability Services can complete caption requests from professors, thanks to 3Play\u2019s roundtrip integration with Kaltura. This helped take the uncertainty out of last-minute captioning requests. It\u2019s so easy, Professors wanted to caption more content for their students!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Impact of Efficient Captioning Workflows<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Haris, who analyzes course media for accessibility compliance and researches new processes and technologies, found that if he could simplify the captioning process, professors would send in their captioning requests in a more timely manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haris believes that professors often have common misconceptions about captioning; perhaps they feel that Disability Services can\u2019t handle last-minute requests or that captioning will require a lot of effort. However, developing a relationship with 3Play Media simplified the process immensely and gave Haris and Disability Services more time to align with professors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professors can now send Disability Services the video that they want captioned, and Haris takes it from there. As long as professors send their video 24 hours before the class, they can submit the video to 3Play and get the captions back in time for the class. Fast and efficient!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once professors realized that the process is not burdensome, they came to appreciate captions even more. In fact, PCC finds that many instructors now want Disability Services to caption all videos they show in class, even if there is no request.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

  1. Students submit captioning and transcription requests.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Instructors to compile lists of videos for captioning before and during the semester(s).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. If no transcript exists, they upload the video to Kaltura so all of their course videos are on one platform.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. From Kaltura, they submit the video to 3Play Media for captioning and transcription. Usually, this process takes 2-3 days, but they can select same-day service for last-minute content.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Disability Services adds interactive transcripts to videos once captioning is completed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
