If characters with disabilities are included in a film at all, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5942094\/sia-music-disability-representation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>they\u2019re routinely played by non-disabled actors<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and stories too often misrepresent disabled experiences and rely on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/arts\/on-screen-and-on-stage-disability-continues-to-be-depicted-in-outdated-cliched-ways\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>cliched tropes of disability.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the coming-of-age film <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/0pmfrE1YL4I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>CODA<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">directed by Sian Heder, we\u2019re thrilled to see authentic Deaf representation and inclusion in this year\u2019s award wins and nominations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CODA<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which stands for \u201cchild of deaf adults,\u201d tells the story of Ruby Rossi, the only hearing member of a Deaf family in Massachusetts. The film has <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/tv-pr\/news\/2021\/12\/apple-original-films-coda-honored-with-nine-hollywood-critics-association-film-award-nominations-including-best-picture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">garnered multiple wins and nominations<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/02\/03\/entertainment\/sundance-film-festival-2021-highlights\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was a hit at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where it won the U.S. Grand Jury Prize for drama and best director and best ensemble. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CODA <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has received acclaim from critics and d\/Deaf viewers for its portrayal of Deaf characters by Deaf actors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the film was nominated for Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture and supporting male actor for <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/01\/12\/entertainment\/troy-kotsur-coda-sag-nomination-cec\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Troy Kotsur<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who portrays Ruby\u2019s father. Kotsur is one of three Deaf actors in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CODA<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and he is the first Deaf actor to score an individual SAG nomination. <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/sag-awards-2022-diversity-squid-game-coda-1235073832\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">He and the rest of the film\u2019s Deaf ensemble are the first Deaf performers to receive nominations in the SAG Awards\u2019 28-year history.<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/01\/12\/entertainment\/troy-kotsur-coda-sag-nomination-cec\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>In a statement provided to CNN<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Kotsur said, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hopefully the recognition that this beautiful film is receiving can serve as a reminder of just how funny, complex, and powerful Deaf voices can be, and that stories with actors who happen to be Deaf can be mainstream stories.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>A step towards Deaf representation in film, but not without room for growth<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CODA <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an incredible step in the right direction for authentic casting and Deaf representation in film, the movie still had to adjust course to solve issues of representation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watching<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> CODA <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">today, it\u2019s hard to imagine the film without Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur, and Daniel Durant, who portray the Deaf members of the Rossi family and who are also culturally Deaf in real life. However, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CODA<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is based on the 2014 French film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Famille Belier<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in which most d\/Deaf characters were played by hearing actors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Matlin was cast in the film, <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6085873\/marlee-matlin-coda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">she pushed against the studio\u2019s desire to cast famous hearing actors for her Deaf family members.<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Thanks to Matlin\u2019s insistence, Kotsur and Durant were cast, ensuring that much of the interactions between the Deaf characters were accurate, natural, and authentic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, no movie is perfect, and critics point to room for growth. While deaf activist and advocate <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/jennafischtrombea.com\/2021\/08\/13\/coda-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jenna Fischtrom Beacom praised the film<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for its casting and unscripted moments with ASL, she noted there were many stereotypes and parts that didn\u2019t feel as realistic, such as Ruby\u2019s sign language and some of the dialogue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was very clear that the dialogue was written by a hearing person,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/deaf-community-responds-movie-coda-starring-marlee-matlin-t230260\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fischtrom Beacom said<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>.<\/strong><\/span> \u201cASL and English are very different languages, with not only distinct syntax, grammar, etc., but also their own idioms,\u201d she said. \u201cThere is overlap, and anything <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be interpreted from one language to another but many phrases just don\u2019t \u2018work\u2019 well when they\u2019re supposed to be coming from culturally deaf-ASL users.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the movie, Ruby is forced to interpret for her family at work, doctor\u2019s appointments, and other formal settings that would typically call for a professional interpreter. She is torn between pursuing her love of music and staying with her family to continue interpreting while they run their fishing business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Ruby\u2019s experiences provide <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.3playmedia.com\/alliedpodcast\/professional-sports-asl-interpreting-with-brice-christianson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poignant representation for many CODAs who grew up without professional interpreters for their parents<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the movie\u2019s writing points toward a need for Deaf inclusion across all creative aspects of a movie\u2019s production. From writers to producers to actors, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AlisonStine\/status\/1426276266475327490?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1426276266475327490%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fjennafischtrombea.com%2F2021%2F08%2F13%2Fcoda-review%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">films need representation across teams<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to tell accurate and authentic stories featuring Deaf characters.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><span class=\"su-highlight\" style=\"background:#DEEFF5;color:#000000\">&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/go.3playmedia.com\/wp-best-practices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Create accessible media with captions \u27a1\ufe0f<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Translation is also highlighted this awards season<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also of significance this awards season is the television show <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.3playmedia.com\/blog\/squid-games-subtitles-when-meaning-gets-lost-in-translation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Squid Game<\/i><\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/tv\/features\/squid-game-netflix-awards-golden-globes-sag-critics-choice-1235128849\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its multiple nominations and<\/a><\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/tv\/features\/squid-game-netflix-awards-golden-globes-sag-critics-choice-1235128849\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> wins.<\/a><\/strong> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Squid Game<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> became the first non-English series and first Korean series to earn a SAG Awards nomination for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The breakout Netflix hit is poised to make history, a testament to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parasite <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">director <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/mX3obZ0lXoU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bong Joon-ho\u2019s 2020 Oscar acceptance speech<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>.<\/strong><\/span> \u201cOnce you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles,\u201d Bong said, \u201cyou will be introduced to so many more amazing films.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>A look towards a more inclusive future for film<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the success of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CODA <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.3playmedia.com\/blog\/a-deaf-superhero-makes-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>other recent films with d\/Deaf actors and characters<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it becomes easier to imagine a future of more inclusive, authentic filmmaking. However, <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/awards\/news\/marlee-matlin-coda-authentic-casting-deaf-1235107681\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in an interview with Variety<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Matlin cautioned being too optimistic without taking action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can\u2019t be too optimistic,\u201d Matlin said. \u201cYou have a right to be optimistic. People give speeches about how great it is to see authentic casting, but I\u2019ve yet to see it happen in a huge way, for all under-represented groups. We cannot sit back any longer. This has ignited a fire you can\u2019t put out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Inclusive casting is an important piece of Deaf representation in film.
