Alt text has been utilized by marketers and website developers to help images (and the pages on which they appear) rank for targeted keywords, but from an accessibility standpoint, this text describes an image\u2019s contents to those who utilize screen readers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>White House Press Briefings<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, Mr. Biden\u2019s administration will be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/politics\/white-house-briefings-will-have-an-asl-interpreter\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the first in history<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to include American Sign Language (ASL) interpretations at all of the White House\u2019s daily press briefings. ASL interpreters are equipped to convey the tone and intricacies of the people they are interpreting, helping those who have difficulty hearing better understand the intended message.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The announcement was made during the January 25th press briefing (which can be viewed below), where the very first point made by Press Secretary Psaki in the announcement is the inclusion of ASL interpreters moving forward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7tpHT1fKQaU\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2021\/02\/01\/biden-white-house-prioritizing-accessibility-disabled-americans\/6662321002\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USA Today<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ASL interpreters can only be viewed through White House media channels, meaning interpretation is not widely available on other platforms such as television news. However, advocates are still in agreement that this move is a step in the right direction when it comes to accessibility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why These Changes Matter<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Press Secretary Psaki states in the above video that \u201cThe President is committed to building an America that is more inclusive, more just, and more accessible for every American \u2013 including Americans with disabilities and their families.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conversely, the previous White House administration faced criticism for failing to meet certain expectations or requirements pertaining to accessibility. Notably <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/08\/03\/politics\/sign-language-interpreters-coronavirus-briefings\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it was sued<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the National Association of the Deaf for not having American Sign Language interpreters at briefings on the COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, aside from avoiding accessibility lawsuits, the current administration is likely focusing on these accessibility measures for the simple fact that <\/span><b>millions of Americans are deaf or hard of hearing, or have some degree of vision loss.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These measures make it easier (or in some cases, possible) for these Americans to access official White House information.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/americanrefractivesurgerycouncil.org\/digital-device-use-eyes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60% of Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experience symptoms related to digital eye strain (or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aoa.org\/healthy-eyes\/eye-and-vision-conditions\/computer-vision-syndrome?sso=y\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Computer Vision Syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).
