Staying connected electronically is even more important if a disability prevents a person from being able to easily travel. By posting pictures or videos of themselves and discussing issues that impact them every day, people with disabilities are also bringing awareness to their very particular and personal issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-15238 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3playmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/socialmedia-300x163.png\" alt=\"social media\" width=\"280\" height=\"152\" \/>It is important to understand that people and companies posting on social media have no control over the platforms\u2019 infrastructures. That being said, there are practical limitations to what corporations can accomplish with respect to accessibility on the social media channels they choose to use. Most social media platforms have accessibility teams, and accessibility improvements are continually rolled out as technology continues to improve at a rapid pace. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many people posting content to social media platforms \u2013\u00a0for either personal reasons or as part of their job \u2013 do not consider or use accessibility features. While the social media platform may not be friendly to all forms of assistive technology, companies can and do control the content they post and should take the necessary steps to make that content as accessible as possible. In many cases, even if the platform doesn\u2019t natively offer accessibility tools, workarounds can be implemented to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3playmedia.com\/2018\/01\/23\/how-to-add-captions-and-subtitles-to-your-social-media-videos\/\">improve accessibility<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Without mentioning any one platform, here is an initial list of accessibility principles that companies should be following with respect to their social media campaigns. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Provide text descriptions for all non-text Visuals<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All non-decorative images and videos should have a text alternative to match the visual information being conveyed. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Informative Graphics<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some social media tools allow you to specify a description for an image, in other cases, text alternatives for informational images must be placed in the body of the post. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Closed Caption (CC) Videos<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All videos should be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3playmedia.com\/resources\/popular-topics\/closed-captioning\/\">closed-captioned<\/a>. Even if the audio track is empty or only contains music there should be an appropriate caption such as \u201cno sound\u201d or \u201cwaltz\u201d or \u201cElton John Bennie and the Jets.\u201d I personally love the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bbc.github.io\/subtitle-guidelines\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BBC guide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to determine what level of captioning detail should be used since it takes into account context. If subtitles are being used instead of closed captioning, it is important to frame the key material so the subtitles do not cover up important visual elements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Companies like 3Play make captioning easy to accomplish. You upload the video, pay only for the duration of the content, and *boom* you get back a 99% accurate transcript, usually within 24 hours. As the parent of a deaf daughter, I can tell you there is no excuse for either relying on YouTube automatic captioning (which is 65% accurate at best) or no captioning at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-15364 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3playmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-11-300x251.png\" alt=\"TV with closed caption icon\" width=\"359\" height=\"300\" \/>A key question in any business decision is what is my return on investment: what do I get back if I make this decision? In an eCommerce world, one of the best ways to determine this is by a metric called CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost). Of course, we know that having captions on videos increases customer engagement and helps with acquiring new customers. I can almost guarantee that when you look at the number of new customers you would acquire from adding captions compared to the cost of actually paying for captions, this would be much lower than your typical CAC. So, adding captions is not only beneficial for your customers &#8211; it\u2019s beneficial for your business! This does not even take into account CLV (Customer Lifetime Value), which is the expected profit attributable to these new customers over time. These new customers you acquire from captioning your videos will continue to spend on your goods or services over the years to come.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Evaluate your videos for Descriptive Audio<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Descriptive Audio (aka <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3playmedia.com\/learn\/popular-topics\/audio-description\/\">Audio Description<\/a>, and sometimes referred to as AD or DA) should be created for videos that contain informational content which is not conveyed on the audio track. Think of the Wizard of Oz. How would a person with significant vision loss know that the Munchkins were people of short stature or that Toto was a small terrier unless it was specifically mentioned in a descriptive audio soundtrack? \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.3playmedia.com\/2017\/06\/28\/when-and-when-not-to-add-audio-description-to-content\/\">Descriptive Audio is not always required<\/a>. Multimedia where the content is largely conversational, \u00a0such as vlogs or interviews don\u2019t typically require DA since the content is more conversational and will more likely be fully conveyed via the audio track rather than through visual cues. On the opposite end of the spectrum, anything animated almost always requires an AD soundtrack, because much of it is visual-only.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-15358 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3playmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/audio-description-1-300x200.png\" alt=\"headphones with plug\" width=\"327\" height=\"218\" \/>There are two approaches to Descriptive Audio \u2013 synthesized voice and live voice. Live voice is expensive because it utilizes union voice actors who have minimum amounts of time they are guaranteed to get paid no matter how long they work. Descriptive Audio occasionally requires editing the video to make the DA track better fit with the visual track. If your budget is limited or your video isn\u2019t going to get tens of thousands of reviews, a synthesized voice is a perfectly acceptable alternative.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For videos that are going to get hundreds of thousands of views, I recommend the live voice. While it is more expensive (around $600 for a 5-minute video) it is meticulously professional and time-synchronized with the video. With live voice, you can more easily match the ethnicity and speech patterns of the video participants. My vendor of choice for live voice DA is <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bridgemultimedia.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bridge Multimedia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Bridge does descriptive audio for Saturday morning cartoons. If you can do DA for Saturday morning cartoons, you can do DA for *anything*.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Use enough strong contrast in color choices<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Text should have a good contrast ratio against its given background. Because most social media is viewed on a mobile device, a best practice would be using a minimum threshold of 5.0:1 <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Don\u2019t embed text in your images<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When you embed text in images, it becomes pixelated (i.e. gets fuzzy) when magnified, making it very hard to read in a \u201czoomed in\u201d state. A few other font-related best practices include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use only sans-serif font families \u2013 serif fonts make things harder to read<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Don\u2019t use an overly ornate script<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Don\u2019t use a lot of italics<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Make your link text short and understandable<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15365 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3playmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-11-300x251.png\" alt=\"link icon\" width=\"253\" height=\"213\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Social media posts typically contain links. Where possible, use link text that is easily understandable. Having your link text be the URL of the link, while common, is very undesirable from an accessibility perspective. It takes a long time for screen readers to announce all the useless information like <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">http:\/\/www\/<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and the top level domain identifier at the end such as .com or \u201c.co.uk\u201d \u00a0While that may not seem like a lot of extraneous information, on a link heavy page it can add several minutes to the time for a screen reader user to listen to the information announced. Where a link cannot be formatted to be optimally accessible, use a URL reduction tool (something like bitly.com) to reduce overly verbose (and not useful) screen reader announcements.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Contact Information<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Provide a means of easy contact, should a user encounter access issues. You can provide an email address (such as accessibility@accessibilitymarketplace.com), a phone number with a user trained in receiving relay calls from the deaf, or both.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>External Links to Social Media Accessibility Pages<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where relevant, include contact information to reach accessibility teams within each social media company, allowing the user direct and immediate access to the help they need with the social media infrastructure (as opposed to the company content).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15366 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.3playmedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-7-300x251.png\" alt=\"laptop with twitter, instagram, and facebook icons\" width=\"245\" height=\"206\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>Use multiple social media channels<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Due to social media infrastructure accessibility limitations, it is strongly recommended to use more than one social media channel for any single campaign. This will prevent reliance on one platform providing a completely accessible experience, as at present none do. Adding \u201cbest experienced on [blank] when using &lt;assistive technology&gt;\u201d commentary is good. If someone is trying to view something on Instagram and it says \u201cbest experienced on Pinterest when using screen readers\u201d with a link to the Pinterest location, that will help screen reader users locate the optimal environment for them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Conclusion<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While no social media platform is 100% accessible at this time, there are many things that social media content managers can do to standardize and improve the accessibility of the content they are posting.
